Rita’s Story – Finding Strength and Confidence through Falls Prevention

Impact Stories

Background

I was invited to KHL by my GP after I had a fall and broke my wrist. I’ve always had aching knees and, if I’m honest, I knew I needed to do more exercise. When the Falls Prevention course was suggested, I thought it could only do me good, so I decided to come along and give it a try.

Before starting the course, I was quite worried about falling again. When I walked my dog, I found myself constantly looking down at the pavement, watching out for uneven ground. It made walking stressful, and I didn’t feel very confident about my balance.

My Experience

Taking part in the Falls Prevention group was a really positive experience. I enjoyed the mix of exercise and information, and everything felt useful and interesting. I also realised that I was more capable than I thought – I remember seeing people arrive with walking frames and thinking, “I’m not there yet.” It motivated me to keep moving and stay active. The sessions also confirmed how important it is to look after myself as I get older – I’m nearly 76, and that matters to me.

The Difference It Made

Since finishing the course, I’ve noticed a big difference in how strong I feel, especially in my legs. I genuinely feel steadier and more confident on my feet. I even have leg muscle now – which I never expected at my age! Everyday activities feel easier, and I can do things for longer without needing to stop and rest. For example, working in my allotment and lifting plants used to leave me aching very quickly, but now I can carry on much longer.

Living Well With Long-Term Conditions

The exercises and advice gave me confidence that staying active is the right thing to do for my body and my independence. The course also helped me feel better in myself overall. I have osteoporosis, high blood pressure and COPD, but I’m not letting that stop me.

More Than Just Falls Prevention

One of the biggest bonuses was what the Falls Prevention course opened the door to. Through KHL, I was encouraged to try other activities, including a ballet-based exercise class. I had danced ballet when I was younger, and rediscovering it has been wonderful – I absolutely love it. I’ve also joined other sessions at KHL and even signed up for a cooking group, which I’m really looking forward to.

The social side has been just as important as the physical benefits. I’ve met lovely people along the way, made new friends, and feel part of a community. KHL has given structure to my week and motivated me to try new things. It’s made a real difference to how positive and active I feel about life.

I would recommend the Falls Prevention course to others – in fact, I already do. It’s helped me feel stronger, safer, and more confident, and it’s led me to so many other opportunities. Coming to KHL has genuinely added value to my life.
